Reading: Everything you need to know about art deco
I wasn't very familiar with art deco style prior to this reading, but I realized I knew of it and just hadn't learned much about it before. I thought it was really interesting how it emerged mainly as a result of the events during World War I and was mostly popular during 1920 through 1930. The reading also describes how art deco was considered a "total style" meaning it influenced everything, from architecture and interiors, to furniture, industrial design, transport, fashion, graphics and art. Although much of the art from this era has shared elements, the reading states that the reason this art style was able to take so many forms is that it was never based on any written theory, making it difficult to define. In terms of elements, it was often known for its use of ornamentation, including bold geometric patterns like chevrons, zig zags and sunbursts. It was also characterized by luxury, through the use of rich materials and colors including ebony and precious metals. Even though art deco was short lasting initially, it was also brought back for a period during 1960- 1970. Even through the present day, modernist styles have become far more popular in comparison. After this reading, I can really see how influential this style was and how it can be translated into inspiration for future art styles too. I also am really inspired by the style, and I want to see what ways I can incorporate it into my own work.
